Gran Fondo Campagnolo Roma Sportive 2017

6th to 9th October 2017
(Event date Sunday 8th October)

Now in its 6th year, the 2017 Gran Fondo Campagnolo Roma will take place on Sunday 8th October and will close the 2017 Gran Fondo season for thousands of amateur cyclists, both from Italy and abroad. The Granfondo Campagnolo Roma offers an innovative formula that is very popular because it brings together enthusiasts of all types of cycling and of all ages, in the absolutely fantastic setting that is Rome.

The main event of the 2017 Gran Fondo Roma will be the 120 km Granfondo that will take cyclists from Rome to the Castelli Romani (Roman hill towns) along an improved route but with an even more amazing start. Following the race start at the Colosseum, world famous icon of the Granfondo Campagnolo Roma, cyclists will go through the historical centre of the city: “The cyclists who come from outside the city and especially foreign cyclists ask for this privilege. Gianluca Santilli, president of the Organising Committee says: Rome and the Castelli Romani without traffic are a dream for cyclists and we are delighted to offer them this joy, which we hope will become a regular occurrence one day.

In 2016 Granfondo Campagnolo Roma joined the WACE circuit (World Association of Cycling Events), together with other great world capitals like New York, Ride London and Cape Town, and international events such as l’Etape du Tour and Vatternrundan in Sweden. In the saddle of your bike, you can enjoy fantastic experiences, starting from Rome that has no equal from a historical and cultural point of view”.

There are 2 distances available: the Granfondo at 123 km with 1.970m of climbing, designed for trained riders and the “In Bici ai Castelli Romani” fun cycle, 62 km to Lake Albano, suitable for all fitness levels, e-bikes also accepted.

The main Granfondo route offers a ride steeped in history, starting in the heart of Rome and heading out into the beautiful countryside of the Castelli Romani tackling the climbs of:

  • Panoramica: 2.3km at 5.9% average ascent and maximum gradient of 8%
  • Rocca di Papa: 1.1km at 10.3% average ascent and maximum gradient of 16%
  • Rocca Prioria: 6km at 6,3% average ascent and maximum of 13%
  • Rostrum: 0.7km at 12% average ascent and maximum of 18%

Planned itinerary for the 2017 event:

The Colosseum, Circus Maximus and the Vatican are just some of the names that spring to mind when talking about this city that has influenced life throughout Europe and the world. The traditional starting point of the Gran Fondo Roma is right by the Colosseum, what better inspiration for a days cycling could you want?
From here you will head out of the centre of Rome, into the countryside of the region of Lazio. En-route there are 4 timed climbing sections, with the highest summit at 746m (Rocca Priora). Once you have tackled the hilly countryside, you head back to Rome, for a glorious finish in the Eternal city.

Friday 6th October 2017 – Arrival day:
Make your own way to your chosen hotel in Rome or book our airport transfer (bookable extra at £ ) and arrive at your hotel where you will spend the next 3 nights on bed and breakfast basis. If you choose to book our airport transfers, you should aim for flights to arrive into Rome no later than 6pm. Our hotel is excellently located in the centre of Rome, for ease of access to the Race start and Race Finish, so all you have to do is focus on your riding. If you arrive in time, this afternoon would be a good time to build your bike.

Saturday 7th October 2017 – Race registration and Expo:
If you haven’t yet built your bike, please do this after breakfast. This morning there will be a bike tour with a local guide. Today you will also need to head to the Race Expo, which will be open between the hours of 9.00am – 8.00pm, where you will collect yo0ru bib number, timing chip (available for hire at the Expo for €5 plus €10 deposit which is returned when you return the chip immediately after the race) and bike tag for tomorrow’s event.

  • If you do not hold a UCI recognised federation cycling licence, you will also be required to present a recently issued Sports Medical Certificate. Without the UCI licence or Sports Medical Certificate, you will NOT be able to ride.
  • Your valid form of identification
  • Your Race Number voucher (which will be emailed to you by the 5th October 2016 by the organisers)

After bib collection, the rest of your day is free to make sure that your bike is in full working order for tomorrow’s event and make any last minute adjustments that you need.
