Saturday 19th May, 2018 – Stage 14 – San Vito to Monte Zoncolan:
The Monte Zoncolan comes at the end of today’s stage after about 4000 metres of climbing and 4 major climbs. From Ovaro, the riders face the slopes of the Zoncolan with maximums of up to 22% that have made the Zoncolan infamous in recent years. The last time the Giro went up the Monte Zoncolan was in 2014 and Michael Rogers was victorious.
Destination for both riders and spectators is the climb of the Monte Zoncolan. The atmosphere will be absolutely electric with many people lining the roads. We will set up a gazebo with chairs and refreshments and make ourselves comfortable just ahead of the rider’s arrival. The cyclists can join us on our guided ride with a warm up in the valley before tackling the Zoncolan. Be aware: this is a tough climb. Some say this is the hardest climb in Italy and possibly the toughest in professional cycling.
The climb has often been compared to other tough climbs like the Mortirolo, Angliru and Alpe d’Huez. Purely looking at the average gradients, it is harder than any of these. The Monte Zoncolan averages 11.9 per cent over 10.1km and has a maximum of 22%.
- L’Angliru in Spain – 12.2km with average of 10.2%
- Mortirolo in Italy – 12.4km with average of 10.5%
- Colle delle Finestre – 18.6km with average of 9.1%
- Passo Gavia – 17.3km with average of 7.9%
Sunday 20th May, 2018 – Stage 15 – Tolmezzo – Sappada:
Today’s stage stars in Tolmezzo which is at just 30km from our hotel. We will also be moving on today to our next hotel on the shores of Lake Garda.
For both cyclists and spectators, we will go to Vigo di Cadore and eventually to Lozzo di Cadore. The riders can ride the 52km directly from the hotel and stop in Lozzo di Cadore, to watch the race as it comes down off the Passo delle Mauria
We will then depart for about 12.00 and stop for lunch en-route so we arrive in Riva del Garda for late afternoon.
After checking out of the hotel and loading our luggage and bikes onto the minibuses, we will take you to Vigo di Cadore and eventually to Lozzo di Cadore. After we have seen the riders come past, we will commence our journey to the hotel du Lac et du Parc Grand Resort in Riva del Garda. We expect the journey to take about 3 hours. After you are settled into the hotel, we have our evening meal at the hotel this evening.
Monday 21st May, 2018 – Giro rest day in Trento:
Lake Garda is the largest of the North Italian lakes and covers 370 sq kilometres. It offers visitors a wealth of excursions and activities. The Dolomites, the historical cities of Verona, Venice, Brescia and Trento are all within easy reach. Visits of the charming lakeside villages and towns are a must, Sirmione, Torbole, Riva del Garda, Limone, Torri del Benaco, Malcesine, to name but a few.
Along with its pleasant climate the natural features of the lake lend themselves to a host of outdoor and sports activities which make it one of the most versatile holiday destinations in Italy.
The Giro del Trentino is multi-day race that takes place in this area every year so we are going to explore some of the climbs from that event today. It recently changed its name to ‘Tour of the Alps’.
As today the riders of the 101st Giro d’Italia are having a rest day, we will take the opportunity to explore some of the local area around Lake Garda. For those who are not cycling, there is plenty to do in Rive del Garda like visiting a local spa, taking a train or cable car ride or doing some leisurely shopping. There are a lot of options for the cyclists and we plan for a big day on the bike today to make the most of this beautiful area.
We will tackle the famous Madonna di Campiglio climb from Riva del Garda today. This is a 140km supported ride with 2500 metres of climbing on the way.
Tuesday 22nd May, 2018 – Stage 16 – ITT – Trento to Rovereto:
On the Giro today is a hilly time trial from Trento to nearby Rovereto. Our hotel is in Riva del Garda so we are just 20km away from the finish of today’s time trial.
The spectators will go directly to the hospitality area at the finish in Rovereto today. You will see the stage live on large screens and you can relax in the hospitality area before watching all the riders coming in one by one from your vantage point at the finish.
For the cyclists we will provide a guided and supported ride from Riva along the lake to Monte Baldo and finally Rovereto. This is about 75km with 2000 metres of climbing. We will set off early to ensure we get the most out of the day and we fit in our ride before all the Giro action.
Finish hospitality area:
Guests of the ‘Dante’ hospitality area arrive at the finish a little before the cyclists, and will have access to the hospitality tent. Being in a hospitality area on the finishing straight is a great way to cheer on your favourite riders without having to push through the crowds of the general public. Viewing of the race is from the hospitality zone, standing area. The hospitality area is located on the finishing straight and will offer snack bar/coffee and drinks service. Every guest will also receive the exclusive VIP gift of Giro d’Italia.
Wednesday 23rd May, 2018 – Stage 17 – Riva del Garda – Iseo:
After the start in Riva del Garda the Giro d’Italia will move towards Milan today.
After breakfast we will stay in Riva as the start is right here today so we can see the build up and the hustle and bustle of the race. After the race start we will provide an airport transfer back to Bergamo airport. Please book flights after 1700 from Bergamo.
