Saturday 19th May, 2018 – Stage 14 – San Vito to Monte Zoncolan:
The Monte Zoncolan comes at the end of today’s stage after about 4000 metres of climbing and 4 major climbs. From Ovaro, the riders face the slopes of the Zoncolan with maximums of up to 22% that have made the Zoncolan infamous in recent years. The last time the Giro went up the Monte Zoncolan was in 2014 and Michael Rogers was victorious.
This is the first queen stage across the Alps. The stage is 181-km long and there are 5 categorised climbs with 4400 m cumulative elevation gain. Monte di Ragogna and its steep climbs and, in the final 45 km, Passo Duron, Sella Valcalda and Monte Zoncolan, without a single flat stretch, are the summits in this stage. 6th finish on the Zoncolan, and the 5th one on the “intimidating” side of Ovaro. Monte Zoncolan has gradients topping out 22% in its first part. In Chialina (1.5 km before the foot of the climb) there wil be the usual pit-stop where the followers’ vehicles will be replaced by motorbikes.
Destination for both riders and spectators is the climb of the Monte Zoncolan. The atmosphere will be absolutely electric with many people lining the roads. We will set up a gazebo with chairs and refreshments and make ourselves comfortable just ahead of the rider’s arrival.
We will take you on our minibus to Villa Santina which is about 25km away from our hotel. You will have the opportunity to ride the final 4 climbs of today’s stage so Vaglio, Passo Duron, Sella Valcalda and Monte Zoncolan. This makes for an 85km ride from Villa Santina. Be aware: this is a tough series of climbs. Some say the Zoncolan is the hardest climb in Italy and possibly the toughest in professional cycling. Of course we are on hand for any support required.
The climb has often been compared to other tough climbs like the Mortirolo, Angliru and Alpe d’Huez. Purely looking at the average gradients, it is harder than any of these. The Monte Zoncolan averages 11.9 per cent over 10.1km and has a maximum of 22%.
- L’Angliru in Spain – 12.2km with average of 10.2%
- Mortirolo in Italy – 12.4km with average of 10.5%
- Colle delle Finestre – 18.6km with average of 9.1%
- Passo Gavia – 17.3km with average of 7.9%
Sunday 20th May, 2018 – Stage 15 – Tolmezzo – Sappada:
Today’s stage stars in Tolmezzo which is at just 30km from our hotel. For both cyclists and spectators, we will go to Vigo di Cadore and eventually to Lozzo di Cadore. The riders can ride the 52km directly from the hotel and stop in Lozzo di Cadore, to watch the race as it comes down off the Passo delle Mauria.
After breakfast, we will take you to Vigo di Cadore and eventually to Lozzo di Cadore. After we have seen the riders come past, we will return to the hotel in and spend our final night there. The cyclists can return by bike making a 100km loop today and the spectators can return on our support vehicle. We have our evening meal at the hotel this evening.
