Etape du Tour & Tour de France 2017
Ride and watch

July 14th-22nd 2017

Ride the 2017 Etape du Tour and watch the 3 stages of the Tour in the Alps. The 2017 Etape du Tour is your opportunity to ride stage 18 of the 2017 Tour de France. The actual stage take place just 4 days after you ride the Etape so this is a perfect opportunity to stay a bit longer and watch the Tour.

This year’s Etape du Tour will be Tour de France Stage 18 between Briançon and the Col d’Izoard. You will be riding a fully supported replica of the Tour de France stage, on 100% closed roads on exactly the same route as the Pros just days later. Sports Tours International is an official tour operator of the Etape du Tour and you will stay in Villeneuve (La Salle Les Alpes) near Briançon with guaranteed entry, airport transfers, event support and much more.

The 2017 Etape du Tour will take place in the Alps on Sunday 16 July. The start is in the town of Briancon in the Serre Chevalier Valley and the finish comes 178km and 2 major climbs later on top of the Col d’Izoard. Briancon and the nearby villages of Villeneuve La Salle Les Alpes and Chantemerle are the best places to stay as you will be very close to registration, the event EXPO village and the start and finish.

About Serre Chevalier:
Briancon is part of the larger ski area called Serre Chevalier. The area consists of a collection of villages along the valley which stretches about 15 kilometres from the village of Monetier Les Bains on one side to Briancon on the other side. If you were to descend down the Col du Galibier and then the Col du Lautaret which you will know from the Marmotte Gran Fondo, you will first get to Monetier Les Bains. Following the valley, you will then come to the village of Villeneuve, also called La Salle Les Alpes. This is where Stage 17 of the Tour de France, from La Mure, will finish. Next is the village of Chantemerle, also called Saint Chaffrey which is about 5 kilometres from the final town in the valley; Briancon.

Our hotel is in Villeneuve (around 10km from Briancon)

Sunday July 16th – L’Etape du Tour 2017:
We anticipate a 07:00/08:00 start for the Etape, so we have organised early breakfasts at all hotels so you can get to the start early to ensure everyone is lined up in the right pens for the start. The organisers allocate pens according to likely finish time and historic Etape performance, therefore faster riders start nearer the front and the slower riders at the back. Please note, we have no influence over your starting pen. The Etape du Tour is a closed road sportive. There will be water stops en-route and mechanical assistance provided by MAVIC. Along the route, there are certain times that you must have passed certain spots, otherwise you may be swept up by the broom wagon.

The return from the finish...
You will descend back down from the finish on top of the Col d’Izoard to Briancon where you will collect your medal and where the finish village with Pasta will be located. After this you can ride back to your your hotel. For those who have booked hotel packages with the evening meal included, we will ensure that there is a later meal time tonight.

Monday July 17th:
After breakfast as everyone else is leaving, you will stay and relax and recover from the exertions from yesterday.

Tuesday July 18th:
After yesterday’s recuperation it’s back on your bike today. With so many cols to choose from, you are a little bit spoilt for choice. The legendary Col du Galibier, part of Tour de France folklore and one of the many cols undertaken during the famous Gran Fondo La Marmotte course, is close by and great test of the legs! Our bike guide will take you out today to explore.

This afternoon, arrive back at the hotel in time for afternoon tea and chill out on the hotel’s terrace before the evening meal.

Wednesday July 19th – La Mure to La Salle Les Alpes:
There are two big, well-known climbs on the programme today. From La Mure, the Col de la Croix de Fer takes the riders into the Maurienne Valley and the Col du Galibier brings them back out of the valley again and over to the Serre Chevalier valley.

The riders have the option to ride up to the top of the Col du Galibier today and watch the riders come past on top of the climb. We will offer the option to ride out from the hotel for a ride to the top or you can join the spectators as we go to the finish of today’s stage in La Salle Les Alpes which is within walking distance from the hotel.

Thursday July 20th – Briancon to Col d’Izoard:

The riders have 2 options today. Either watch the Peloton come past on the Col de Vars or climb up to the Col d’Izoard and be there to watch the finish.

Friday July 21st – Embrun to Salon de Provence:
As the stage start today is in Embrun, we will offer a guided ride over to Embrun so we are in the ideal place to see the build up to the start and get a great position to see the riders set off for today’s stage. Afterwards we will ride back to Villeneuve.

Saturday July 22nd – Departure day:
After breakfast we will leave Villeneuve. We offer transfers from the hotel to Turin Airport after breakfast at 08.00. We expect the transfer to take about 3 hours so please book flights which depart after 13.00.
