Le Grand Depart - Dusseldorf

The 2017 Grand Depart of the Tour de France takes place in the German city of Dusseldorf.
Joins us for a fabulous weekend of top class cycling in the German city of Dusseldorf for the 2017 Grand Depart of the Tour de France.

In July 2017, the German city of Düsseldorf will be the 4th city in Germany’s history to welcome the Grand Départ of the Tour de France. Preceding Dusseldorf were Cologne in 1965, Frankfurt in 1980 and West-Berlin in 1987. Sports Tours International is an official Tour Operator of the Tour de France so we will offer travel packages to the 2017 Grand Depart in Dusseldorf and to the rest of the 2017 Tour de France.

Spend a fantastic weekend of cycling in Dusseldorf, Germany for the Grand Depart of the 2017 Tour de France. Hotel stays in Dusseldorf city centre are available for 2, 3 or 4 nights with exclusive VIP hospitality on both stages included.

The 2017 Grand Depart of the Tour de France takes place in the German city of Dusseldorf. On Saturday July 1st the 2017 Tour de France starts with a 13 kilometre individual time trial in the streets of Düsseldorf. The start and finish will take place in front of the Messe, the exhibition park where the race headquarters and press centre will also be located.

The next day the start of the second stage will be from the Burgplatz. The Burgplatz will also host the team presentation on Thursday. After a parade through Dusseldorf along the harbour and the climb of the Grafenberg the riders of the 2017 Tour de France will leave Dusseldorf for Liege.

Dusseldorf City centre hotels:
We are pleased to offer you 2 different hotel options depending on how long you would like to spend in Dusseldorf with us. If you are staying for 4 nights then we have chosen to stay at the Melia Dusseldorf and if you only want 2 or 3 nights then you will stay at the Holiday Inn Dusseldorf centre. Both hotels are excellently located within walking distance or a short journey on public transport to all of the important locations of the Grand Depart of the 2017 Tour de France in Dusseldorf.

Izoard finish hospitality on Saturday July 1, Stage 1 – Dusseldorf – Dusseldorf:
The Tour de France sets up a limited number of areas located on course within the final portion of the stage. These have names like Izoard and Galibier. Access to these areas is usually reserved and by invitation only. You will see famous ex-cyclists, sponsors and team guests. Typically these areas are within 200 metres or so of the finish line. There is also a spectator friendly elevated viewing area. You will be served with drinks and snacks and there is a big screen to watch the LIVE action as it unfolds. After watching the finish, you will celebrate the victory with Champagne.

Village Depart on Sunday July 2, Stage 2 – Dusseldorf to Liege:
The 2017 Tour de France entourage and organisation travel around with the riders. The team buses park within an enclosed and restricted area. An expo type village is created at the start of each one of the stages.
It is usually here that everyone who is linked in any way to the Tour de France like TV, sponsors and celebrities from the cycling world will show themselves. Also local companies will be keen to show off their wares. Your VIP passes will give you access to the village and the rider’s paddock. If you into collecting autographs, this is the best place for it.

The Holiday Inn is just 10 minutes from Dusseldorf Airport by S-Bahn train, making it ideal for a flying visit. Your stay here is on a Bed & Breakfast basis, giving you the flexibility to decide where to eat in the evenings.

This brand new hotel opened in November 2016. The Holiday Inn Düsseldorf City on Toulouser Allee is located in the newly developed “Le Quartier Central” close to the heart of Düsseldorf, only half a mile from Düsseldorf main station.

The modern, air-conditioned non-smoking guestrooms are equipped with free Wi-Fi, 32 inch LED TV, telephone and coffee/tea facilities. The Holiday Inn Open Lobby offers various breakfast options as well as all day dinning, working and relaxing.

Thursday June 29th – Team presentation of the 2017 Tour de France at the Burgplatz
Arrive this morning in Dusseldorf in time for the team presentation of the 2017 Tour de France.

The sporting part of the “Grand Départ” officially begins with the presentation of the teams on Thursday, June 29th 2017.  The team presentation is usually an event open to the public where all the different teams present their team of riders for the Tour de France.

Also throughout the city of Dusseldorf, a Cycling Campaign and cultural collaborations are planned.

This evening is your first night at our chosen hotel; the excellent 4 star Melia Dusseldorf or 3 star Holiday Inn Dusseldorf.

Friday June 30th:
You also have the option to arrive today. If you decide to do so then you have the option to book your rooms at the hotel Holiday Inn Dusseldorf city centre. Today you will be able to witness the official team training which has always attracted spectators in the past and Dusseldorf will be buzzing with Tour de France related activities.

The hosting of the “Grand Départ” also includes the following public events ( not included with your travel package):

  • Official dinner on the evening before the official start
  • Gala event “Le Nuit de Tour”
  • 5 pavilions in the village for guests of the city
  • “Cycling for Everyone” event
  • Public fan festival with live broadcast on the big screen

In addition to further projects associated with the Cycling Campaign (for example “Radaktiv” and “Radnacht”, two annual cycling events held during the day and night respectively), there are also a number of cultural collaborations planned (for example “Singpause” – vocal training and singing with school children, “Nacht der Museen” – long night of museums, city museum etc.).

Saturday July 1st – First stage, Düsseldorf – Düsseldorf – individual time-trial of 13 kilometres. Click here for map

A time-trial of 13 kilometres in the streets of Düsseldorf will be the first task for the riders of the 2017 Tour de France. The start will take place in front of the Messe, the exhibition park where the race headquarters and press centre of the event will also be. After starting on the east side of the Rhine river, the riders will be heading towards the south-east of the city. From there, the riders will cross the river for a loop on the left bank, before again crossing in the opposite direction to go to Königsallee, the emblematic street of the city. Then, after the opera, the course turns to the north-west, once again along the Rhine. The finish will be decided by the Messe. “It’ll be an entirely flat course on wide avenues. One for the time-trial specialists.

Sunday July 2nd – Start of the second stage, Düsseldorf to Liege. Click here for map

It’ll be from the Burgplatz, the castle place, having hosted the team presentation three days before, that stage two will take off. The stage will start with a 9 kilometre parade going along Düsseldorf harbour. The official start will take place on the east side of the city on Kaiserstrasse and as soon as kilometre 6, the first points of the king of the mountain competition will be awarded at the top of Grafenberg.
The riders of the 2017 Tour de France will then leave the city towards east to go through Erkrath and the Neander valley, a prehistoric site where the bones of the Neanderthal Man were discovered. The race then heads north towards Mettmann and then west to once travel through Düsseldorf. Around fifty kilometres of this second stage will have been covered around Dusseldorf before heading to Liege

Single travellers and twin to share:
We welcome single travellers on our tours and holidays as it is a great way to join a like-minded group of people and you will make lots of new friends. If you would like to join our group as a single traveller we can offer you two options. A single room or if you want to avoid the single supplement then you can make use of our ‘twin to share’ option. We will pair you up with another traveller (of the same sex) and you can enjoy the event without having to pay extra.
