The Raid Pyrenean 2017 Cycling Holiday

The Raid Pyrenean is a 714km cycling randonnée across the back bone of the Pyrenees connecting the town of Hendaye on the Bay of Biscay with Cerbere on the Mediterranean. All the famous climbs are featured such as Tourmalet, Aubisque, Marie Blanc, Aspin, and Peyresourde. This is an absolute classic cycling challenge and every keen cyclist should have done the Raid Pyrenean at least once.

The Raid Pyrenean is a must do for every cyclist. You will be blown away by the beauty of the Pyrenean mountain range. At Sports Tours we have been providing travel and support packages to the Raid Pyrenean for many years now.

Flights and airport transfers:
On Sunday June 18th we will come and collect you from Biarritz airport. From the UK there are the following flight options that we will accommodate airport transfers for:

  • FlyBe – London Southend to Biarritz arriving at 11:45
  • FlyBe/ Air France – Birmingham to Biarritz arriving at 12:55
  • Ryanair – London Stansted to Biarritz arriving at 17:05
  • BA – Heathrow to Biarritz arriving at 20:05

Guided or non-guided....
We offer 1 guided and fully supported week from Sunday June 18th until Saturday June 24th. Our experienced guides will make your experience the best that it can be. If this doesn’t suit you then we also offer the option to book a self-guided week where we make all travel arrangements for you but you take care of your own transport.

The Hotels:

*** Campanile de Hendaye Hotel – Arrival Day
The Campanile de Hendaye Hotel Restaurant is a 3 star hotel with 46 rooms, which offers you a location surrounded by beaches and mountains, at the gateway to Spain.

In the rooms you are guaranteed of a good night’s sleep thanks to the top of the range bed linen. You will have a private bathroom as well as a flat screen television and you can enjoy a cup of tea, herbal tea or coffee. You can remain connected thanks to the unlimited and free wifi service.

*** Hotel de L’Ours in Arette – Night 1
The Hotel de l’Ours (the Bear Hotel, formerly Hotel Salies) holds the EU Ecolabel. It is at the heart of the village of Arette, in the green valley of the Barétous in the department of the Pyrénées Atlantiques.

Ideally located in the village centre, so you are close to summer events and fetes, only 20 minutes from the ski resorts of la Pierre Saint Martin and Issarbe.

*** Hotel Les 2 Cols – Night 2
At the heart of a small genuine village, the hotel and restaurant Les Deux Cols is located between two major Pyrenean passes (Tourmalet, Aspin) at the gates of the Pic du Midi in Campan.

You will be welcomed in the traditional French hotel way with hospitality, kindness and professionalism. Our regional food emphasizes the products of our valley (cabbage soup, trout, lamb) and is served in a convivial atmosphere.

*** Hotel Eychenne in Saint Girons – Night 3
In the middle of the Pyrenean Mountains, in the heart of the Natural Park, one minute away from downtown Saint-Girons, the Hotel & Restaurant Eychenne welcomes you with lots of smile in a cosy atmosphere.

On offer are all the necessary comfort for your stay, with a double bed or two single beds.  Authentic style of their ancient decoration.

*** Hotel Corrieu – Night 4
For the forth night you will stay just a stones throw away from the summit of Mont Louis and in the heart of the Pyrenean Mountains at the Hotel Corrieu. This is the perfect place to relax at the end of a long days climbing. Boasting magnificent views of the Pyrenees this cozy former coaching inn is a real delight. During your stay you will have access to the spa and will enjoy some rustic home cooked food in the hotel fabulous restaurant.

The room includes  shower, WC, Flat screen TV, Balcony looking towards the summits of the Pyrenees.

*** Cerbere Hotel La Vigie - Night 5
Set in the village of Cerbère, Hotel La Vigie is 2 km from the Spanish border. It is a 5-minute walk from the beach and offers rooms with views of the Mediterranean Sea.

Closest to the Spain border, Cerbère is the last typical catalan village before Spain. Here, the nature is wild mixing the mountains and the mediterranean sea.

“Suspended impossibly on a cliff of shear rock, L’hotel LA VIGIE is a wonderful glimpse into the architecture of late 50’s”.

When you take your breakfast on the fabulous terrasse, you discover the view on cerbere and on the wild nature all around.

Below is a day-by-day travel itinerary for the Raid Pyrenean.

Sunday 18th June: Arrival day
Why not ride the Gran Fondo Quebrantahuesos the Saturday before for a real Pyrenean adventure?

Today we are providing an airport transfer from Biarritz Airport to Hendaye. Please contact us to give us your arrival time.
Alternatively you can make your own way to Hendaye, where overnight accommodation is at the Hotel Campanile. On arrival in Hendaye, we will have a track pump and tools ready for you to put your bike together. Our staff are on hand to assist. After the evening meal our Sports Tours staff will do a Raid briefing and you can also get to know your fellow riders for the week.

We will accommodate airport transfers for the following flight options:

  • FlyBe/ Air France – Birmingham to Biarritz arriving at 12:55

Monday 19th June: Day 1: Hendaye to Arette – 151km with 2531m of climbing
After breakfast our first day begins with a good day’s riding to Arette. Although quite long today is a day to find your cycling legs as there are not many massive climbs on the menu today. We will have a scheduled lunch stop en route where you can have your packed lunch. There is the Col d’Osquich en route which tops out at 500m altitude. Like every day, your luggage will be taken to tonight’s hotel in advance and we are on hand throughout today to support you on your ride. On arrival at this evening’s hotel in Arette, we will enjoy the evening meal together. Tonight we are staying at the Hotel de L’Ours in Arette.

Tuesday 20th June: Day 2: Arette to Sainte Marie de Campan – 148km with 4665m of climbing
We have a big day today. Lots of climbing with the 2 big ascents of the Aubisque/ Soulor and the infamous Tourmalet. Like every day, we are on hand to support you throughout the day. Packed lunches will be there for you at our agreed lunch stop and energy products are provided throughout the day. Tonight we are staying at the Hotel Les 2 Cols near Sainte Marie de Campan for an evening meal with local delicacies and a comfortable night’s rest

Wednesday 21st June: Day 3: Sainte Marie de Campan to Saint Girons – 139km with 2953m of climbing
Another marathon day with a lot of kilometres. After breakfast we will tackle the first of today’s climbs; the Col d’Apin at 1489m followed by the Col de Peyresourde at 1569m today’s highest climb and the Col des Ares which is quickly followed by the Col de Portet d’Aspet.
Tonights hotel is the Hotel Eychenne in Saint Girons

Thursday 22 June: Day 4:Saint Girons to Mont Louis – 143km with 3638m of climbing
The Col de Port is first on the route today with the Port de Pailhères as the highest Col of the day. The Col de la Perche and Mont Louis will mean a challenging end to the day.
This evening we will dine and stay in the Hotel Corrieu in La Lagonne, near Mont Louis.

Friday 23rd June: Day 5: Mont Louis to Cerbere – 122km with 1000m of climbing
Today is the final day of your 2017 Raid Pyrenean. It is all downhill with a couple of small climbs towards the end and you will get to your goal; the Mediterranean and the town of Cerbere where we will stay at Hotel La Vigie.
Tonight we will have a celebratory meal in Cerbere and you can have a dip in the sea if you wish, We will take some photos to register the moment and your fantastic achievement.

Saturday 24th June:
After breakfast we will transport you back to Toulouse airport. Please book flights after 16:00. There is also the option to be dropped off at either Carcassonne Airport from where there is a flight at 18.00 to London Stansted with Ryanair.

Drop off at Carcassonne at 13:15 for the following flights:

  • Ryanair > 17:45 Carcassonne > London Standsted 18:45

Drop off at Toulouse at 14:15 for the following flights:

  • Easyjet > 17:15 Toulouse > London Gatwick 18:05

Single travellers and twin to share:
We welcome single travellers on our tours and holidays as it is a great way to join a like-minded group of people and you will make lots of new friends. If you would like to join our group as a single traveller we can offer you two options. A single room or if you want to avoid the single supplement then you can make use of our ‘twin to share’ option. We will pair you up with another traveller (of the same sex) and you can enjoy the event without having to pay extra.
