The 2018 Ride Across Portugal is a road cycling event which crosses Portugal, from North to South in several fully supported stages. The rider limit is set at just 100 riders to guarantee the event quality.

From June 3rd to 9th the second edition of Ride Across Portugal ® will cross Portugal from Chaves on the mountainous northern border with Spain to Faro in the Algarve on the sunny south coast. Five stages, over 740 kilometers will challenge not only every rider’s fitness but also their emotions by discovering the diversity and history of a whole country in a week full of emotions, friendship and cycling.

The challenge is to complete the five demanding stages in a limit time required for security, and there will be several timed segments (2017 featured 4 or 5 segments each day) along each stage where the athletes can fight for stage and final general classification rankings.

The mountains of Trás-os-Montes, the slopes of the Douro Valey, the hills and rivers of Beiras, the rolling roads of Ribatejo, the unforgettable horizons of Alentejo and the warm Algarve coast are the main ingredients of this cocktail that will show a perfect country for cycling. The course will follow the longest and most mythical road in Portugal (National Road 2). However on some more busy sections of this road, the course leave the EN2 and go on alternative, more interesting, quiet and safer roads.

Monday 4th June, 2018 – Chaves to Viseu – 173 KM / 2800 M (D+):
The Ride Across Portugal stage 1 starts from Chaves, a city located really close to the Portuguese northern border with Spain and it’s where the National Road N2 has its Km0 landmark.

The 1st part of this stage will take the riders through successive ups and downs without major difficulties, crossing the northern landscape of Trás-os-Montes region. The next kilometres will be spent pedaling between the sloped terraced ground of vineyards so characteristic of the Alto Douro Vinhateiro region, the oldest controlled wine region known in the world and considered a World Heritage by UNESCO.

This will lead the caravan to the Douro river crossing into the city of Peso da Régua right before the gradient starts increasing towards the Mézio summit, with its 1000m of elevation located in the Montemuro mountains. This will be the highest point of all of the R.A.P. course. The last part will be mostly going down, with a few minor climbs until Viseu, the city that welcomes the finish of this demanding first stage.

09:00 – Starting Ceremony of the 2nd edition of Ride Across Portugal
09:30 – Start of stage 1 from Chave
15:15 – Finish of Stage 1 – arrival of the first athletes in Viseu
18:50 – Finish of the 1st stage – arrival of the last athletes in Viseu

Hotel in Viseu and evening meal at hotel.

Tuesday 5th June, 2018 – Viseu to Pedrogão Grande:
Viseu is the start town for the second day of this challenge and the athletes will have to ride through the mainly flat roads of this district for the first third of the stage before they hit the banks of the Mondego river after the Aguieira dam. After a few kilometres riding along the longest Portuguese river comes the first climb leaving from its valley. But this one is only the warm up to a longer second ascent, crossing the Lousã mountain. Both considered the main difficulties of the day. Pedrógão Grande will host the finish line for the day where the “warriors” will have their deserved rest over the great lake of the Cabril dam.

09:30 – Start of stage 2 in Viseu
14:00 – Finish of Stage 2 – finish of the first athletes in Pedrogão Grande
16:50 – Finish of the 2nd stage – finish of the last athletes in Pedrogão Grande

Hotel in Pedrogão Grande and evening meal at hotel.

Wednesday 6th June, 2018 – Pedrogão Grande to Montargil – 125 KM / 1430 M (D+):
After following the Zêzere river for the first kilometres, the participants will gradually leave the northern and central mountains of Portugal and you will getting in to the flatter landscapes of the Alentejo, not before they climb to the mainland Portuguese geodesic centre located at the Melriça peak. The Tejo river will mark the change in the scenery that surrounds the R.A.P. course. The last part of the stage will face some of the flattest sections of the entire course and the riders will be easy rolling to Ponte de Sor where everybody will have the chance to enjoy some extra free time, provided by this shorter and faster stage, to recover for the following two stages.

09:30 – Start of the 3rd stage in Pedrogão Grande
13:15 h – Finish of the 3rd stage – arrival of the first athletes in Montargil
15:50 h – Finish of the 3rd stage – arrival of the last athletes in Montargil

Hotel in Montargil and evening meal at hotel.

Thursday 7th June, 2018 – Montargil to Albernoa – 163 KM / 1140 M (D+):
The story of this stage is marked by the unique Alentejo landscape. The apparently flat profile for the day doesn’t do the toughness of the ride any justice and the participants will experience for themselves as they progress in the stage, that idea of the Alentejo being flat is a myth. The constantly undulating road framed by sunflower fields colouring the horizon, cork tree forests and golden plains of cereals as far as the eye can see, will take the participants to the small village of Albernoa, right in the middle of the this amazing country landscape.

09:30 – Start of to the 4th stage in Montargil
14:10 – Finish of the 4th stage – arriving of the first athletes in Albernoa
16:40 – Finish of the 4th stage – arriving of the last athletes in Albernoa

Hotel in Albernoa and evening meal at hotel.

Friday 8th June, 2018 – Albernoa to Faro – 148 KM / 1080 M (D+):
The typical Alentejo landscape and its white painted houses still dominate the scenery of the first part of the last stage. Continuing to head south and the race will enter the Algarve and with that, another significant change in the race. The mountains are back to challenge the participants for the last big difficulty of the Ride Across Portugal. The climb that will take the riders through the Caldeirão mountain will end shortly after the top at Barranco do Velho, an iconic mountain pass where many editions of the Volta ao Algarve have been decided, right before the downhill to Faro, where the R.A.P. will end.

The Ria Formosa, bathing the capital of the Algarve and bringing to the city the breeze and water from the Atlantic Ocean, will be the perfect place for the finishing party and welcome all the participants in this great multi-stage challenge that cross Portugal from North to South.

09:30 – Start 0f to the 5th stage in Albernoa
14:00 – Finish of the 5th stage – arrival of the first athletes in Faro
16:05 – Finish of the 5th stage – arrival of the last athletes in Faro
