Spring Cycling Training Camps 2017

11th to 18th March 2017

We offer a week of warm weather cycling at the Hotel Albir Playa, on the Costa Blanca, Spain from Saturday 11th until 18th of March. Daily guided group rides will let you enjoy the quiet, good quality roads near Benidorm in Spain. Lots of pro cycling teams use the Costa Blanca as their pre-season preparation so if it’s good enough for them…..?

The Costa Blanca is one of the best places in Europe to base your pre-season cycling training. Book this raining week and have the option to buy your entry for the 2017 Etape du Tour or the Marmotte Alps Gran Fondo (sold out on the event website) for £75.

Why the Costa Blanca?
The most popular area for pro cycling teams to train in the winter is the mountainous headland between Alicante and Valencia. Teams are based in hotels in this area from where they head out into the hilly interior for long, base-mile training rides. Many teams have been staying in this area for years and they bring in staff and riders for a series of meetings and training rides to prepare the squad for the coming racing season.

The mix of good roads, mild weather, and light traffic along Spain’s coast delivers the ideal base for pre-season training camps. Etixx-Quick-Step, Katusha, and Astana are all regular visitors. Teams will stay in hotels for weeks on end as riders loop in and out for meetings, rides, photo sessions, bike fittings, physiological testing, and other pre-season business, such as testing new equipment. Many teams return in January as the training tempo increases ahead of the season’s first major races. Most of the European teams have gravitated to Spain for a variety of reasons. It’s still close to home, at least for the European staff and riders, and the riding terrain is ideal to build base fitness. The weather is typically mild and it rarely rains, all of which is in sharp contrast to northern France, Italy, and Belgium this time of year.

108km, 1,700m+ (67 miles, 5,580ft+)
Albir Gardens rideThe first ride of the week has a gentle flat start along the coast, through Calpe and Moraria towards Javea, before heading inland towards Gata de Gorgos.  From here there’s a gradual ascent through Lliber and Parcent, before tackling the Col de Rates, and descending back to Albir.

The route between Calpe and Javea will follow some of the roads from the 2017 Vuelta Time Trial, which saw Chris Froome victorious as he attempted to claw back Nairo Quintana’s overall lead.

129km, 1,520m+ (80 miles, 5,000ft+)
Albir Gardens ride1Today we again head towards Javea, but with some shorter climbs added into the route.  From Javea, we continue along the coast to Denia, before heading inland to Pego, then returning to Albir via Orba, Jalon and Benissa.

137km, 2,830m+ (85 miles, 9,300ft+)
Today we head inland immediately, passing through Finestrat and Sella before tackling the Col de Tudons, topping out at 1,024m (3,359ft).  A short descent into Alcoleja is followed by the Col du Confrides.  After a long descent, we’ll tackle the Col de Rates in the opposite direction to earlier in the week, before returning to Albir via the coastal road.

The Col de Tudons may be familiar from the role it played in the dramatic penultimate stage of the 2017 Vuelta, with the peloton climbing both sides of this 2nd category climb in quick succession.

38km, 423m+ (23.5 miles, 1,400ft+)
Today is a recovery day, so we will go for a short ride along the coast, passing through Benidorm and heading Wast towards Villa Joyosa.

The shorter day gives you plenty of time to make the most of Albir Playa’s facilities, or to explore the local area.

135km, 2,430m+ (84 miles, 8,000ft+)
Albir rides 3Today starts with the long, gradual climb from sea level to the top of the Col de Confrides at 960m (3,150ft) via Callosa and Guadalest.  From here, we’ll pass through Benasau, Gorga, Castell de Castells and Parcent, before our final climb of the Col de Rates. From here we’ll descend back down into Albir.

81km, 1,410m+ (50.5 miles, 4,630ft+)
Our final day in the saddle sees us head West towards Villa Jojoysa, along the Amadorio Dam towards Relleu. We will then pass through Finestrat before descending to the coast via Benidorm.
