On Saturday 25 August 2018 the 73rd edition of the Vuelta a España will start from Málaga before moving to nearby Granada. The 2018 Vuelta a Espana:
The 3 week La Vuelta a Espana Grand Tour of Cycling will start in Malaga on Saturday 25 August and finish in Madrid on 16 September 2018. Here at Sports Tours International we are proud to be an official VIP tour operator of the Vuelta a Espana which means that we provide unrivaled access to the Vuelta. The 73rd edition of La Vuelta will again surprise with an innovative, ground-breaking and colourful departure. Malaga ’s Pompidou Museum will be the departure point for La Vuelta 2018, which will commence in the Malaga capital on Saturday, the 25th of August and end on Sunday, the 16th of September in Madrid. Also, for the first time in 9 years, the first stage will be an individual time-trial that will culminate in the emblematic Calle Larios, in the city’s historical centre.

The Gran Salida of the 2018 Vuelta a Espana in Malaga and Granada:
The Andalucian coastal town of Malaga has hosted the start of the Spanish Grand Tour twice before – in 2000 and in 2006. The race will yet again start with a time trial, although this time it will be an ITT rather than the traditional team time trial. Like in 2017, the Vuelta will also visit Granada on the 2018 edition.

The stages of the 2018 Vuelta a Espana – first week in Malaga and Granada:

Stage 1 – Saturday 25 August, 2018 – Málaga – Málaga 8 km ITT
Stage 2 – Sunday 26 August – Marbella – Caminito del Rey – uphill finish
Stage 3 – Monday 27 August, 2018 – Mijas – Alhaurín de la Torre – mid-mountain stage
Stage 4  – Tuesday  28 August – Vélez Málaga – Sierra de la Alfaguara – mountain finish
Stage 5 – Wednesday 29 August – Granada – Roquetas del Mar – mid-mountain stage

Cross the official finish-line experience:
This is a great day of cycling. The cyclists have authorisation to ride on the final section of today’s stage route and cross the finish-line. The riders will then join the spectators and you will have your photo taken on the official podium before a guided visit of the finish area’s technical zone and watching the finish of the riders today.

VIP START VILLAGE ACCESS:
One of the best experiences for obtaining an insight behind the scenes of the biggest show on earth. Wear your VIP access badge and mill around the official Vuelta a Espana start village with celebrities, journalists and of course the riders and their entourage. The 2018 Vuelta entourage and organisation travel around with the riders. The team busses park within an enclosed and restricted area. An expo type village is created at the start of each one of the stages. It is usually here that everyone who is linked in any way to the Vuelta like TV, sponsors and celebrities from the cycling world will show themselves. Also local companies will be keen to show off their wares. Your VIP passes will give you access to the village and the rider’s paddock. If you into collecting autographs, this is the best place for it.

The grand Melia Granada Hotel offers accommodation in a historic area of Granada. The hotel opened its doors in 1957 and was refurbished in 2002.
This hotel is set in the middle of Granada, just 400 meters from The Alhambra, Granada Cathedral and Generalife. A short distance to a bus stop enables you to get to Royal Chapel, Albayzin and Campo del Principe in no time. The hotel is situated near the chapel and the cathedral.

Friday 24th August, 2018:
Please make your own way to our excellently located hotel Barcelo in Malaga. This hotel is within walking distance from the centre of Malaga and the location of the team presentation and the start and finish of stage 1.  In Malaga we are also well located to access stage 2 and 3.
Alternatively, we offer a transfer from Malaga airport at 12.00 and 18.00 today so please book flights to arrive in line with these times.

The rest of the evening will be at your leisure to sample some local restaurants if you wish.

Bike rental:
If you have booked bike rental through us then your bike will be delivered and fitted for you this evening at the hotel.

Team presentation:
In the evening of Friday 24th August, the teams and riders participating in La Vuelta 2018 wille be introduced to the public at a public venue in the city of Malaga, during a gala broadcast on Spanish public television and on Eurosport.

Saturday 25 August – Stage 1 – Malaga – Malaga – ITT:
As the ITT will more than likely take place this evening, we will take the opportunity to take the cyclists out for a guided ride from Malaga. The day is free for non-cyclists to explore the city of Malaga. In the evening, we walk the short distance from the hotel to the finish and gain access to the finish hospitality area. You will see the passage of the Vuelta a Espana Publicity Caravan, followed by the arrival of the riders of the 2018 Vuelta a Espana.

Finish hospitality area:
This is an exclusive area located just a few metres from the finish line. Access only for those with VIP Vuelta accreditation. You will watch the riders finish and you can keep up to date with the splits and who is in the lead on the large TV screens in the hospitality area.

Sunday 26 August – Stage 2 – Marbella to Caminito del Rey:

The stage:
Stage 2 of the 2018 Vuelta a Espana starts from Marbella. In 2015 this climb was first used in La Vuelta and Esteban Chaves attacked to beat by Tom Dumoulin by 5 seconds ahead. The final climb is 3.4 kilometres at 7%.

Our itinerary:
We offer you the option today to join us on our guided ride from Malaga to the finish at Caminito del Rey on the course before the riders. We offer a 130km option directly from Malaga or a 100km option from Zalea. We will support you with our minibus. If you are not cycling, you can join us in the support minibus and come to the finish of today’s stage.

The rest of the evening will be at your leisure to sample some local restaurants if you wish.

Monday 27th August – Stage 3 – Mijas to Alhaurin de la Torre:

The stage:
Stage 3 takes place in its entirety in the hills near Torremolinos. The start is in Mijas and today’s finish in Alhaurin de la Torre is just 20 kilometres away from our hotel in Malaga.

Cross the official finish-line experience:
Today we have a fantastic treat in store for you. The cyclists have authorisation to ride on the final section of today’s stage route and cross the finish-line. The riders will then join the spectators and you will have your photo taken on the official podium before a guided visit of the finish area’s technical zone and watching the finish of the riders today.

The rest of the evening will be at your leisure to sample some local restaurants if you wish.

Tuesday 28th August – Stage 4 – Vélez Málaga – Sierra de la Alfaguara:
Today the start takes place in Velez – Malaga which is a 40-minute drive away from Malaga and this stage finishes very close to Granada which is where we will spend the next 2 nights.

Our itinerary:
Today before we depart, please check out of the hotel and bring your luggage with you if you as we are moving onto Granada today. We will take you to Almunecar from where we will take you on a guided ride all the way to the finish of today’s stage near Granada. This is a 120km ride. We will be in situ at the finish to watch today’s winner being crowned before going to our hotel for the night in Granada where we will have our evening meal.

Wednesday 29th August – Stage 5 – Granada – Roquetas del Mar:

Our itinerary:
Today we will enjoy VIP start village access in Granada before a guided and supported ride today. We will tackle the final section of one of last year’s stages from Granada up to Sierra Nevada.

VIP START VILLAGE ACCESS:
We have access to the Vuelta Start Village in Granada. The 2018 Vuelta a Espana entourage and organisation travel around with the riders. The team busses park within an enclosed and restricted area. An expo type village is created at the start of each one of the stages. It is usually here that everyone who is linked in any way to the Vuelta like TV, sponsors and celebrities from the cycling world will show themselves. Also local companies will be keen to show off their wares. Your VIP passes will give you access to the village and the rider’s paddock. If you into collecting autographs, this is the best place for it.

Today we will offer 2 guided rides up to Alto Hoya de la Mora in Sierra Nevada. All riders will descend the 32km back down to Granada after the finish up in Sierra Nevada.

The Vuelta has visited the Alto Hoya de la Mora on four occasions, a reference for many hikers who dare to take on the Pico Veleta, the third highest peak in Spain. This ski resort is located East of the Sierra Nevada National Park, an area recognised as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1986, and offers privileged views over the neighbouring hills.

Evening meal and final night at the hotel in Granada tonight.

Thursday 30th August – Stage 6 – Departure day:
Today we will provide you with a transfer back to Malaga airport. We expect to get to Malaga airport for 10.00 so please book flights to depart after 12.00.
