The Start Weekend in Malaga

24th to 28th August 2018

On Saturday 25 August 2018 the 73rd edition of the Vuelta a España will start from Málaga with 3 full stages and a start in the area.
Spend the first weekend of the 2018 Vuelta a Espana in Malaga and watch the ‘Gran Salida’ in Malaga. Excellent accommodation will be provided in the heart of Malaga near all the action and exclusive Vuelta a Espana start and finish hospitality is included in your long weekend trip.

The 2018 Vuelta a Espana:
The 3 week La Vuelta a Espana Grand Tour of Cycling will start in Malaga on Saturday 25 August and finish in Madrid on 16 September 2018.

The 73rd edition of La Vuelta will again surprise with an innovative, ground-breaking and colourful departure. Malaga’s Pompidou Museum will be the departure point for La Vuelta 2018, which will commence in the Malaga capital on Saturday, the 25th of August and end on Sunday, the 16th of September in Madrid. Also, for the first time in 9 years, the first stage will be an individual time-trial that will culminate in the emblematic Calle Larios, in the city’s historical centre.

The Gran Salida of the 2018 Vuelta a Espana in Malaga:
The Andalucian coastal town of Malaga has hosted the start of the Spanish Grand Tour twice before – in 2000 and in 2006. The race will yet again start with a time trial, although this time it will be an ITT rather than the traditional team time trial.

The stages of the 2018 Vuelta a Espana Gran Salida Malaga:

Stage 1 – Saturday 25 August, 2018 – Málaga – Málaga 8 km ITT
Stage 2 – Sunday 26 August – Marbella – Caminito del Rey – uphill finish
Stage 3 – Monday 27 August, 2018 – Mijas – Alhaurín de la Torre

Finish hospitality area:
This is an exclusive area located just a few metres from the finish line. Access only for those with VIP Vuelta accreditation.

  • Open bar all afternoon

Cross the official finish-line experience:
This is a great day of cycling. The cyclists have authorisation to ride on the final section of today’s stage route and cross the finish-line. The riders will then join the spectators and you will have your photo taken on the official podium before a guided visit of the finish area’s technical zone and watching the finish of the riders today.

Friday 24th August, 2018:
Please make your own way to our excellently located hotel Barcelo in Malaga. This hotel is within walking distance from the centre of Malaga and the location of the team presentation and the start and finish of stage 1. In Malaga we are also well located to access stage 2 and 3. Alternatively, we offer a transfer from Malaga airport at 12.00 and 18.00 today so please book flights to arrive in line with these times.

The rest of the evening will be at your leisure to sample some local restaurants if you wish.

Bike rental:
If you have booked bike rental through us then your bike will be delivered and fitted for you this evening at the hotel.

Team presentation:
In the evening of Friday 24 August, the teams and riders participating in La Vuelta 2018 will be introduced to the public at a public venue in the city of Malaga, during a gala broadcast on Spanish public television and on Eurosport.

Saturday 25th August – Stage 1 – Malaga – Malaga – ITT:
As the ITT will more than likely take place this evening, we will take the opportunity to take the cyclists out for a guided ride from Malaga. The day is free for non-cyclists to explore the city of Malaga. In the evening, we walk the short distance from the hotel to the finish and gain access to the finish hospitality area. You will see the passage of the Vuelta a Espana Publicity Caravan, followed by the arrival of the riders of the 2018 Vuelta a Espana.

Finish hospitality area:
This is an exclusive area located just a few metres from the finish line. Access only for those with VIP Vuelta accreditation. You will watch the riders finish and you can keep up to date with the splits and who is in the lead on the large TV screens in the hospitality area.

Sunday 26th August – Stage 2 – Marbella to Caminito del Rey:

The stage:
Stage 2 of the 2018 Vuelta a Espana starts from Marbella. In 2015 this climb was first used in La Vuelta and Esteban Chaves attacked to beat by Tom Dumoulin by 5 seconds ahead. The final climb is 3.4 kilometres at 7%.

Our itinerary:
We offer you the option today to join us on our guided ride from Malaga to the finish at Caminito del Rey on the course before the riders. We offer a 130km option directly from Malaga or a 100km option from Zalea. We will support you with our minibus. If you are not cycling, you can join us in the support minibus and come to the finish of today’s stage.
The rest of the evening will be at your leisure to sample some local restaurants if you wish.

Monday 27th August – Stage 3 – Mijas to Alhaurin de la Torre:

The stage:
Stage 3 takes place in its entirety in the hills near Torremolinos. The start is in Mijas and today’s finish in Alhaurin de la Torre is just 20 kilometres away from our hotel in Malaga.

Today we have a fantastic treat in store for you. The cyclists have authorisation to ride on the final section of today’s stage route and cross the finish-line. The riders will then join the spectators and you will have your photo taken on the official podium before a guided visit of the finish area’s technical zone and watching the finish of the riders today.
The rest of the evening will be at your leisure to sample some local restaurants if you wish.

Tuesday 28th August – Stage 4 – Departure day:
Today  we will provide you with a transfer back to Malaga airport. We expect to get to Malaga airport for 09.00 so please book flights to depart after 11.00.
